Ice Cream Dreams

Floaty Fabrics, lightweight maxi dresses, your hair pulled back with a chiffon scarf, and a pair of oversized sunglasses protecting your eyes. But in these glorious summer days, what’s going on behind those oversized Chanels?

You can bet it’s not a full on smokey eyes look with heavy black liner and mascara. This year, its all about the pastels. Soft baby pink with a light layer of mascara, a slick of blue liner contradicting another slick of liner, this time in lime green… Or maybe its a soft lilac and pink combination with a wash of sparkle, or a striking pastel rainbow of pink, lemon and mint?

Here are some of the best colours currently on the market.

Ruby and Millie Eye Colour in Yellow. Not egg yolk yellow, but a creamy Cornish Vanilla ice cream yellow. Lay it on strong with black liner, or soft with brown mascara.

Estee Lauder new shadows in Enchanted Forest, Lilac Whimsy and Ivy Envy. Soft soft soft! So easily blendable, these new shades and formulations from Tom Pecheux are screaming “summer days, Pimms in the evening and long long walks in the country”

Rimmel Glam Eyes Mono Shadow in Precious Rose. This has the softest sheen that I’ve seen in an eyeshadow, in a long time. Almost invisible at first glance, this has a shimmer that really only shows in sunlight. Perfect!

Clinique Colour Surge eyeshadow quad in Polar Blue. Creamy, dreamy and so very pretty. Classic quality and longevity from this classic brand. Timeless elegance.

Lancome Color Design shadows in Darling Pink and Cupid Blue, plus Ombre Absolu in Un Taxi Mauve. Hot pink or not? Both! Lay the pink down wet for a high impact strawberry ice cream pink, or wash it on dry for a very pretty look.

Rituals eyeshadow singles in AmberGold, Rose Romance and Jade Delight. Silk and smooth, these are enriched with natural sapphires. So so soft on the skin, yet the gemstones included give such an intensity of colour, you won’t be able to stop at just one shadow, you’ll have to go back for more!

Illamasaqua pure pigments in Conquer, Lust and Furore. High shine metallic powders from this ego altering company takes eyeshadow to a whole new level, and because Illamasqua’s products are designed for use anywhere, add a dash of this to another product and start making your own colours up.

Boots 17 eyeshadow trio from the Candy Collection, in Dolly Mixture. 3 candy coloured shadows in yellow, pink and blue. Not the longest lasting eyeshadows around, but for less than £5, you can have a perfect look that’s right on trend with the season, but without busting the budget!

Tesco All About Face eyeshadow singles in Heather, Meadow and Light Pink. Very sheer colours, okay, so they won’t last all day on their own, but applied directly over a neutral cream shadow or base, and you can be summer stylish for mere pence, and trust me, it lasts a lot longer than some other low priced brands!

Boots 17 Eyeshadow Trio in ‘Dolly Mixture’

The perfect name for this fun trio! The pink, blue and yellow shades look fresh and bright for the Summer and are presented in a shell-like pattern. The playtime possibilities are endless, they go on very smoothly and layer beautifully on their own or over each other, although I needed a fair amount of shadow to fully show off the colours. I have experimented wearing all three together as well as individual colour blocking.

The colours stay fairly true to their appearance in the palette, the pink is a cool candy hue, the blue is a seaside turquoise and the yellow a delicious egg yolk.

I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of longevity but was pleased to see the colours still crisp after a hot afternoon, so at £4.99 this trio is super value.

I received a Rituals single eyeshadow to test and this is another brand I had never heard of.

I’m not sure about the Ayurvedic and spiritual principles (third eye anyone?!) behind the brand, but the product itself is quite impressive.

At £10.90 for a single eyeshadow, it’s up there with Mac, Urban Decay and Benefit pricewise. The shade I tested was Amber Bronze, a soft bronze/brown colour with a satin finish. The shadow was butter soft and felt lovely to use. The pigment was nice and even and the colour you get is what you see in the pan. It was very easy to blend and there wasn’t much fallout at all.

There are quite a few colours in the range and the packaging was good and felt sturdy and luxe.

I would recommend that these are worth a look, if only for the lovely butter like quality of the shadows.

I really like the Estee Lauder and the Lancome shadows. They are really easy to apply, blend and smudge. I’ve never used either before but would definitely consider using them again in the future and would like to try the other colours in the range.

Ruby & Millie eyeshadow in Yellow 210P

-Packaging: I actually like like the packaging and the way this opens. It’s a little round compact which swings open to reveal the eyeshadow with a mirror underneath.
-Price: I believe these are around £10 which makes them way out of my budget. But I’d consider buying again if I had one of £5 vouchers that Boots often give out.
-Colour: I’d call this yellow eyeshadow for yellow eyeshadow virgins! lol In the pan it looks like a mustardy yellow and it goes on as a muted soft mid yellow. It’s very wearable as it’s not neon nor lemon yellow.
-Texture: Very smooth almost creamy. It’s also very well pigmented and quite soft so you can load up your brush very easily. I didn’t notice any fallout at all and I packed it on.
-What does it go with?: I wore it with a grass green eyeshadow in the crease and a black eyeshadow in the puter V to create a smoky look and it worked really well. I’d say to keep eyes and lips neutral though so as not to drown out the yellow shadow.
-Final verdict: This eyeshadow is very good and I’m definitely planning to wear it again. If I had the money, I’d probably buy one in every colour as it’s so fab.
